da doce: Back towards the end of December, Sky Sports reported that Southampton were considering a renewed effort to sign Genk right-back Joakim Maehle, who the club attempted to sign in the January 2019 window as well – now, The Athletic’s Carl Anka has revealed the chances of that deal happening.
What’s the word, then?
da gbg bet: The 22-year-old has made 26 appearances in all competitions so far this season for the Belgian side, including six outings in the Champions League and two meetings with European champions Liverpool.
Maehle has scored just once while recording four assists, although last season, the Genk No.31 amassed far more impressive numbers having racked up 14 goal involvements in total – four goals and ten assists.
Crystal Palace were also believed to have scouted him, although since that report, things have gone fairly quiet on the Maehle front – until now.
What are the chances?
Well, after we put the question to Anka himself in a Q & A session on Friday, we are now aware of the percentage chances regarding this transfer actually being completed.
35%
We wrote: “Hi Carl, what are the percentage chances of Genk right-back Joakim Maehle joining Southampton this month?”
To which the Southampton correspondent replied: “Ralph’s comments yesterday mean the numbers take a dip. I probably have it at 35%. Still digging!”
It’s the dawn of a new decade in the Premier League, but how much do you know about the last 10 years?
Anka is referring to Hasenhuttl’s pre-Wolves quotes, in which he appeared to backtrack on his December promise that the Saints “will do something” in the full-back positions this month.
The Austrian basically said that transfers are now no longer a ‘must’ but a ‘can’ in light of Southampton’s recent form which has seen them win four and draw one of their last five Premier League outings before the Wolves clash.
While there are still 12 days of the window remaining and plenty of opportunities for fresh faces to arrive at St Mary’s, the chances of seeing Maehle in particular don a red and white shirt seem slim if Anka’s 35% prediction is anything to go by.
In other news, Carl Anka has also revealed when Hasenhuttl will speak to the club about a new contract…
