da betway: Spanish outlet OK Diario claim Manchester United are willing to offer Gareth Bale €20m (£16.8m)-a-year in wages to leave Real Madrid and join Jose Mourinho’s revolution.
So, what’s the story?
da bet7: Well, essentially, it all centres around Man United wanting Gareth Bale to be their next ‘Galactico’. The Red Devils made Paul Pogba the most expensive player in the history of the beautiful game over the summer, paying a fee of around £90m for the Frenchman in a demonstration of their financial muscle and ambition after a barren few years.
And the next step in the Manchester club’s grand plan seems to be luring the former Tottenham Hotspur star back to England, with a salary of around £320,000-per-week being offered. Further to this, it’s understood contact with the Welshman’s agent has been made, although there’s little indication that the 27-year-old will be heading to Old Trafford any time soon.
Can we believe it?
Yes and no. There’s quite a bit of context to be added to this story, both in terms of Man United being able to fund the deal and Bale himself turning his back on Real. It’s been widely suggested of late that Los Blancos are keen to tie their attacking star down to a new contract at the Bernabeu, but it seems unlikely that he could expect such a lucrative pay-packet given the delicate balance of massaging Cristiano Ronaldo’s ego.
Rolled into the equation is Man United’s ability to fund such a deal. Indeed, the mega salary supposedly being put forward is not the only financial factor to consider, with Bale himself likely to cost in excess of £100m – in today’s climate it’s near impossible to predict a value, but something between £120m and £150m is not beyond the realms of possibility. Interestingly, recent reports from AS reveal the Premier League heavyweights could end up making a profit on Pogba, despite the vast outlay, due to the commercial impact expected, so with Bale also extremely marketable, this deal is not as financially ludicrous as it first appears.
In terms of past interest, Man United apparently wanted Bale when he left Spurs for Real in 2013 and even the most casual of football observers will have since seen stories surrounding their desire to snap him up, so OK Diario’s claims are by no means otherworldly.
What would he bring?
Naturally, Bale would be the star man at Man United should a deal go ahead. Likely to be stationed in an attacking midfield role, potentially centrally, his ferocious pace would be a weapon for Jose Mourinho, while his frankly ludicrous goal return certainly bodes well.
Bale has improved dramatically as a player since joining Real, which is a scary thought when you look at the stats (via WhoScored) from his final seasons in the north of London, where he was often the central attacking midfielder.
Will it happen?
We’re sceptical. The money is probably there and there’s no doubt signing Bale would take Man United to the next level. However, much depends on Champions League and title aspirations; the Wales international is unlikely to sacrifice the chance to be Real’s main man, once Ronaldo moves on or fades in ability, for anything less than the virtual guarantee of success in Manchester.
