da dobrowin: Newcastle defender Steven Taylor will undergo an operation on an injured Achilles on Monday, and will most likely miss the remainder of the 2011-12 season.
The centre back hobbled off late in the Tyneside club’s 3-0 defeat to Chelsea at the weekend, and manager Alan Pardew had admitted that he feared it could be a serious injury for his talismanic defender.
After scans on Sunday, the club have confirmed the worst, and that Taylor faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
“Steven Taylor sustained an Achilles injury yesterday at the end of our game with Chelsea,” a statement on the side’s official website reads.
“After medical assessment he will be having surgery tomorrow and it is likely he will be out for the rest of the season.”
The news will come as a blow to Newcastle, with Taylor’s early season form one of the main reasons for the team’s excellent start to the campaign.
Pardew, amongst others, have recommended Taylor to England coach Fabio Capello, but he will now stand little chance of being included in the squad for Euro 2012.
The Geordies also lost captain Fabricio Coloccini to a thigh knock in the defeat to Andre Villas Boas’ men, as the lack of depth in the Toon squad now threatens to undo their early season heroics.
