Rooney made his return to action for the Three Lions after two games out through suspension when England played Ukraine on Tuesday. He scored the only goal in a 1-0 win to put Roy Hodgson’s men through at the top of the group and set up a quarter-final tie with Italy.
It was his 29th international goal and the Manchester City defender has admitted that the striker just being out on the field has helped to lift the spirits of the team.
“Wayne is a world-class player with a presence on the field. You know he can score at any time, even though it was probably one of his simplest finishes against Ukraine,” Lescott told The Sun.
“But him just being out there creates a better atmosphere, while Steven Gerrard was also outstanding again.
“When you’ve people like Wayne and Stevie, with what they have achieved in their careers, I don’t think they are going to play any game thinking it would be an achievement just to qualify.
“They are winners and it leaks into the squad. For me, winning the Premier League this season at Manchester City helps. I just want to go on and progress.”
Having topped Group D ahead of France, England have an extra day of rest before their quarter-final compared to Les Bleus and Lescott stated it was welcome.
“That is a big bonus for us,” he added.
