da dobrowin: When Liverpool went 0-1 down at home to Stoke, there were more than a few nervous fans watching on at Anfield and from further afield on TV sets across the globe.Jonathan Walters headed in at the near post after just 12 minutes, and with all of the Reds’ major title rivals having all picked up Boxing Day wins, anything other than a comeback would have dealt Jurgen Klopp’s men a potentially fatal blow in the race for the big prize. And it was a comeback they got as Adam Lallana and Roberto Firmino made it 2-1 before half-time. The second 45 was a similar story as Liverpool weathered some early pressure from Stoke before Giannelli Imbula put the ball into his own net and Daniel Sturridge scored after a horrendous back pass from Ryan Shawcross.
The match ended 4-1 and may well be looked back on as a vital one at the end of the season if Liverpool can bridge the six-point gap between themselves and leaders Chelsea.
Old boys back
With the Premier League a division in which players move relatively often and tend to stay in given the big wages on offer and quality of the football played, it’s common to see stars returning to former grounds wearing different jerseys. But, it’s rare to see so many in one go, with Mark Hughes’ starting XI containing THREE ex-Liverpool players in Joe Allen (above), Glen Johnson and Peter Crouch, while Charlie Adam made it four by taking his spot on the bench.
Mersey revenge…
Last time out Liverpool beat Everton 1-0 in the Merseyside Derby, so it was quite apt that the scoring was opened by a boyhood Toffee, Jonathan Walters. The Irishman’s header was his sixth goal in just twelve Premier League matches against the Reds and, as the picture shows, he enjoyed it!
Lallana-rama
Liverpool needed a goal to get back into the game, and the man for the occasion was Adam Lallana. That has often been the case this term with the Englishman’s neat effort his seventh of the league campaign thus far, and he had a former Red, Glen Johnson, to thank for the defensive mishap that allowed him to squeeze the ball into the net.
Firm-ly in front
Having not scored since early November – the 6-1 drubbing of Watford – Roberto Firmino’s strike on the verge of half-time will have come as welcome relief for Klopp. The Brazilian has been in the headlines for the wrong reasons of late, but he reminded the Anfield faithful of his qualities at the Kop end as he swivelled in the area and fired a left-footed effort into the net, via both posts.
Agony for Imbula
It was hard not to feel for Giannelli Imbula as his outstretched foot diverted Divock Origi’s cross into the net. Had the Stoke man not got to the ball, Sadio Mane would have sent it over the line, but in his efforts to make up for some horrendous Potters defending his name will forever be the one looked at for this particular strike.
Sturridge off the mark
It’s hard to believe that Liverpool’s forth goal of the night was Daniel Sturridge’s first league effort of the season. The striker, who has netted four in League Cup action, has struggled to get into Klopp’s XI on a regular basis due to the form of others and injury woes, but he made no mistake when Ryan Shawcross’ wayward back pass gave him a golden opportunity. The striker rounded the ‘keeper and slotted into an empty net, which will surely have come as a relief for him.
