Andy Townsend has been discussing Marcelo Bielsa’s frustration with Leeds United striker Tyler Roberts during the Whites’ 2-0 defeat to Arsenal in the League Cup.
The Lowdown: Leeds out of League Cup
On Tuesday, the Whites were defeated 2-0 by Arsenal in the League Cup following goals from Calum Chambers and Eddie Nketiah.
It is the latest poor result in what has been a difficult campaign – as it stands, the Elland Road outfit are 17th in the Premier League table and have now lost the opportunity to be just a few wins away from a trophy.
The Latest: Townsend discusses Roberts
Speaking on talkSPORT (via HITC), Townsend discusses an incident involving Roberts during the game. He said:
“When Tyler Roberts lost control of that ball, in his own half, Bielsa was not happy at all – arms were up in the air, he turned away in disgust. And literally within that second he turned to Gelhardt and said you’re going on”
The Verdict: Bielsa frustrated
It is unsurprising that Bielsa is frustrated with his players. Last term, they were able to secure a top-half finish thanks to some impressive displays, but they look a different team so far this campaign, unable to perform at the same intensity as they previously have done.
When things go wrong, as is the case at the moment, you must make sure you get the basics right. Against Arsenal, that just wasn’t the case, and the incident involving 18-time Wales international Roberts is symbolic of his side’s struggles. He, and his teammates, must fix the easy things as soon as possible, and success will follow.
In other news, this man has been suggested as a potential Bielsa replacement.
